Throughout my childhood, I had been exposed to the various pop culture aspects of ancient studies. I grew up with the somewhat unconventional stories of Adonis and Hercules. I read the Odyssey in just middle school, devouring the cultural aspects and mythology. Mythology is where I really found my passion for the ancient world. I don't only find Greco-Roman mythologies interesting, but also those that span the ancient worlds. I find the way that religion can shape a society and vice versa fascinating.
Mythology is what led me into my first Latin course as a freshman in high school. I took classes in Latin until I left to pursue higher education. In high school, I was an avid participant in Certamen (Latin quiz bowl- the nerdiest (best) sport ever) and the Latin Club. High school and those activities were where I found my first classical community.
Right now, as the title suggests, I feel like I am on the precipice. There's no danger, of course, but I struggle to write about my entry path, because I know I am still delving into new facets of the classical and ancient studies community. There is still so much more to learn. Next year, in college, I plan to study Latin as one of my majors. I can safely say that Roman culture is my strong suit, but I definitely have a lot to learn. While that is true, I love looking at other classical societies and how they affect each other as well as exist in their own right. Classical studies will always have a place in my heart, especially as I continue down this path.
